DESCRIPTION: The Cedars, Flitwick Road, Ampthill. Annual coach trip to the seaside. This was lunchtime in Southend circa 1960. It was not unusual for one or more of the participants to go missing for a while. Much has been written elsewhere about the history of poor peoples welfare in Ampthill. The facility has had various names over the years - including 'Union Workhouse' 'Workhouse' 'House Of Industry' 'Institution' and finally 'The Cedars' Rod Warrington lived at the Cedars from 1949 to 1965 where his parents were in charge of day to day operations - father Bert as Superintendent and mother Ella as Matron. The fourth member of the family was Daphne - Rods sister This is one of the photographs that Rod has kindly provided for inclusion on this website.
